  Every day I'm torn between interesting self-expression and staying humble and obvious enough to do the simple things I need to do without resentment. My Conscience is usually quite heavy, and the virtuous Humility professed by this book seems far away.

• 📰 The Long Path that Leads from the Making of Our World to God

  It will not be governed by money, or profit; it will not be governed by social politics; it will be governed simply by the desire and firm intention to make beauty around us, and to contemplate the true nature of beauty, which is Humility.

• 📙 Crippled Grace

  The New Testament contains some striking contrasts with Aristotle’s analysis of Virtue. In particular, it praises virtues that Aristotle knows nothing about—faith, hope, and Love—and counts as virtues qualities that Aristotle treats as vice, such as Humility.

  Why value Humility in our approach to God? Because it accurately reflects the truth. Most of what I am – my nationality and mother tongue, my race, my looks and body shape, my intelligence, the century in which I was born, the fact that I am still alive and relatively healthy – I had little or no control over.

  this special virtue, Humility, can be defined as a disposition to resist the temptation to attempt to achieve the goals of magnanimity by means other than second-person relatedness.

  What about those characteristics of the magnanimous person that seem remote from an ideal of Christian virtue? While the phraseology seems strange, a good many of these characteristics can be understood in terms of confident second-person dependence, and are hence compatible with Humility, rather than a self-sufficient arrogance.
