  The pinnacle and prototype of Stoner Noir is The Big Lebowski, whose protagonist "the Dude" seems to have become, in Eldritch's reading, "some kind of modern archetype, comparable in significance to Hamlet."

  One of the best things about The Big Lebowski is how it makes fun of the complex plotlines typical of noir screenplays. I always get disoriented trying to follow those narratives, and in stoner noir the protagonist is also dazed and confused.

  The plot of The Big Lebowski starts with a dramatic scene where a gang of confused thugs, having mistaken the stoner protagonist for a wealthy old man with the same last name, break into his house and end up pissing on the beautiful rug that "really tied the room together."

  Joel Coen said of Lebowksi that they wanted to “do a Chandler kind of story – how it moves episodically, and deals with the characters trying to unravel a mystery, as well as having a hopelessly complex plot that’s ultimately unimportant.” For this reason, the “plot” of The Big Lebowski unravels and evaporates in the last act into a fog of misdirection and misapprehension which the various actors had fashioned around an illusory kidnapping. This relates also to the paranoia of potheads, and the literary paranoia of Pynchon’s work.
